Preventive Medicine May Help Lower Ulster Co.’s Above Average Obesity Rate

Did you know that according to the last community health assessment for Ulster County, obesity remains a top concern for professionals working in preventive medicine? The assessment shows that our county’s adult and childhood obesity rates, when compared to other NY counties, are above average. The groups that seem to be having the hardest time keeping their weight at a healthy level are children under the age of 19 and adults 45 years of age or older.

That’s partially why our FirstCare Medical Center team couldn’t help but take note of an article that appeared in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics this summer. The article pointed out how families’ perceptions about their weight play a significant role in their lifestyle choices and how one member’s perceptions may impact another’s. Understandably, parents and authority figures have great influence over younger members of the family.

With that said, Ulster County adults wishing to have a positive impact on their families’ health may want to consider enrolling in our weight loss program. Supervised by an experienced physician, it is one of the preventive medicine related services that we offer at our FirstCare Medical Center in Highland. Unlike some of those exercise apps and videos people seek out online, our program takes into account all of the latest research about healthy exercise and nutrition.

The way that our program works is rather straightforward. Our preventive medicine team will conduct a thorough health exam and then come up with the best care plan possible for the given situation. In most instances, the plan will include access to a personal Health Coach, specially prepared meals, routine weigh-ins and continuous guidance from many of our team members. So Ulster Counties’ families will be able to move along at their own pace and hopefully motivate other loved ones to jump on board and do the same.
