Health Care Tips: 5 Backyard Barbecue Foods for People with Gout

Barbecue-FoodsDid you know that having a history of acute gout attacks doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy barbecue foods with family and friends? It’s true. There are great tasting, low purine meals available that would fit right into an everyday or holiday weekend menu. So to help all of our Highland, New York, friends and neighbors prepare for their upcoming Labor Day parties, we wanted to share our health care practitioners’ list of five gout-friendly foods:

1.) Veggie Burgers

For starters, certain veggie burgers are a good option to consider. We’d suggest preparing ones that are made with low purine grains and pastas instead of beans. Examples of low purine veggie burger binders are rice, mashed potatoes, couscous, risi and orzo.

2.) Grilled Veggies

A heaping plate filled with grilled vegetables is also generally low in purines. Just try and keep the dish’s cauliflower, asparagus and mushroom content to a minimum. That’s because it’s widely recognized that all three inherently have low to moderate levels of purine.

3.) German Potato Salad

German potato salad is another great barbecue staple that is gout-friendly. Unlike other forms of potato salad, it is traditionally made without mayonnaise or other really fatty dressings. Most of the classic recipes use cider vinegar and canola oil in their place. To keep on track, you’ll also want to skip the bacon and go with a substitute. Great, low purine substitutes to consider are smoked paprika and chipotle chili peppers.

4.) Grilled Tomatoes with Low Fat Cheese and Herbs

Grilled tomatoes prepared with or without low fat cheese and herbed toppings make grout-friendly, barbecue fare too. Try using a variety of tomatoes to see which ones you prefer. In most instances, use indirect heat when grilling your tomatoes. Otherwise, they are apt to fall through the grates before you’re through.

5.) Grilled Fruits

Lastly, we’d suggest finishing off your low purine barbecue meal with grilled fruits. There are a lot of different fruits that tend to grill up quite nicely. A few that you might want to consider grilling up at your next event are bananas, pineapples, peaches, plums and rhubarb.
